KATHMANDU, May 20: In the four months since Donald Trump began his second term as the US President, his administration has deported 126 Nepalis from the United States between January 20 and May 19, 2025. During this period, the Trump administration deported a significantly higher number of Nepalis compared to previous years.
The immigration office reported that the US Deported an average of more than 30 Nepalis each month over the past four months. Sources said two Nepalis arrived in Nepal on Monday after deportation, and earlier, on May 13, three more Nepalis returned following deportation.
People, who enter the US, often through illegal means often face deportation. Police question deportees to gather information, primarily about the human traffickers who facilitated their travel.
US authorities accused the deportees of entering illegally, residing without a visa, or staying with malicious intent.
During his presidential campaign, Trump pledged to crack down on immigration. Shortly after taking office, he signed an executive order directing the deportation of undocumented immigrants.
The Trump administration also released a list targeting 1,445,549 immigrants for deportation, including 1,365 Nepalis, all accused of residing illegally in the US
In 2024, the US deported only 35 Nepalis—the total number deported in a full year under President Joe Biden. Since Trump returned to office, US authorities have deported nearly that many Nepalis every month.
