Study on Impacts of Migration on Forestry Sector, Forest Management and Forestry Institution

This project was undertaken to study the impacts of migration on forestry institutions in Nepal for the Multi Stakeholder Forestry Programme (MSFP), a Government of Nepal forestry programme, jointly supported by the Governments of Finland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom and which was being implemented in 43 districts of Nepal. Given the large scale of out-migration taking place all over the country, no sector in Nepal was unaffected by it and this was true for the forestry sector as well. Migration en masse and remittance of migrants sent back have had several implications on land use, labour relations, rural livelihoods and institutions. The context in which local forestry institutions functioned and how forest management and forestry sector interventions took place was changing. The study thus aimed to understand this changed context and how local forestry institutions were adapting. It also considered the issues that needed to be addressed to make the forestry sector initiatives more relevant for rural populations.
