Jeevan Baniya holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Oslo, an MA from the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) Ajou University, and a BA from Tribhuvan University. He has served as a faculty member at Tribhuvan University, where he taught master’s and PhD degree courses and supervised students in dissertation work. He has provided advisory and technical support on issues related to labour, mobility, social security, employment, skills, and (re)integration to the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security (MoLESS), Government of Nepal; the National Human Rights Commission; UN agencies such as the ILO (Geneva, Nepal and Kenya), IOM, and UN Women; development partners including the World Bank, SDC, and GIZ; as well as research institutions such as the Centre for Policy Research and the United Nations University; alongside trade unions and civil society organizations. He also served as an Expert Member in a Task Force formed by the Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security (MoLESS) in 2018, and contributed as a Subject Expert to Chapter Four of The Sixteenth Plan (2024/25-2028/29) at the invitation of the National Planning Commission (NPC), Government of Nepal. He was the lead researcher for the Nepal Labour Migration Report 2022. He has been involved in several labour and mobility-related research projects with the University of British Columbia, the University of Amsterdam, the University of Krem, CMI the University of Bergen, among others.
His academic interests include public policy, labour and migration, governance, disaster, and gender and social inclusion (GESI). Occasionally, he writes op-eds and is regularly interviewed by national media for commentaries, particularly on issues of labour migration, employment, (re) integration, and governance.
