A total of USD 6 billion is remitted out of Malaysia every year, and Nepal receives a little less than USD 200 million or 3 per cent of the total remittances sent out of Malaysia. The amounts remitted are, of course, only calculated estimates as there is no accounting of the true volume of remittances because migrant workers make use of various forms of informal networks to send money home and also because a considerable proportion of workers’ earnings also comes into Nepal as consumer items such as TV sets and mobile phones.
