Reintegration Programs Ineffective for Returning Migrant Workers

22 December, 2025

A study by the University of Amsterdam and CESLAM reveals that government reintegration programs for returning migrant workers remain ineffective. Despite policies aiming to utilize their skills and capital, 54 youth surveyed across Kathmandu, Dhankuta, and Biratnagar struggled due to lack of market access and initial funding. The study highlighted poor coordination between agencies and a lack of awareness among workers regarding the Reintegration Programme (Operation and Management) Directives for Returnee Migrant Workers, 2022. Researchers emphasized the need for long-term mentoring and mental health support, noting that current efforts focus too narrowly on economics while ignoring gender-responsive and psychological needs. https://english.nepalnews.com/s/main-left/nepal-news-evening-briefing-monday-december-22-2025/
