37 Nepalis trafficked to Myanmar Scam Centers rescued

20 November, 2025

A total of 37 Nepali citizens, who had been lured to Myanmar with promises of attractive jobs but were forced to work illegally in online scamming centers, have been rescued and returned to Nepal safely on Tuesday.

According to the Embassy of Nepal in Bangkok, the victims were taken to Myanmar through various channels and compelled to work in scam operations involving online dating fraud, online casino and gaming scams, phishing and crypto-related fraud.

After Myanmar security forces raided one such scamming compound on October 19, 2025, the Nepalis had fled to Thailand seeking help.

The embassy, in coordination with Thai authorities, facilitated their rescue and repatriation. The group arrived in Kathmandu on Wednesday via Nepal Airlines flight RA402.

The embassy also said that efforts are underway to repatriate 23 more Nepalis stranded in Myawaddy (Myanmar), two in Mae Sot (Thailand) and four in Cambodia as soon as possible. Coordination with government agencies in Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia is ongoing.

Issuing a renewed warning, the embassy urged all Nepalis to go abroad for employment only after obtaining proper labour approval as mandated by the Government of Nepal. It cautioned the public not to fall for deceptive offers promising quick and easy money, especially in countries like Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, where many such trafficking and scam networks operate under the guise of tourism.

The Embassy of Nepal in Bangkok has also requested the media and civil society to help spread awareness on this issue.
