Bhim Prasad Subedi

Former Chairperson, University Grants Commission (UGC) and Higher Education Quality Assurance and Accreditation Council (HEQAAC), Kathmandu

Professor Bhim Prasad Subedi is the former Chairperson of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Nepal and the Chairperson of Higher Education Quality Assurance and Accreditation Council (HEQAAC), Nepal. Prior to joining the UGC, he served as a Professor of Geography at Tribhuvan University, Nepal since 1979 and served there for almost 40 years in various positions. Having completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Tribhuvan University, he went on to obtain his PhD degree in Geography from the University of Hawaii, USA, with the East-West Center Scholarship. His major areas of specialisation are social and gender dimensions of population (primarily migration and ageing), urbanisation and environment relations, social safeguards and livelihood studies. His research approach emphasises the humanisation of geography through use of local and oral sources of information in making meanings. Apart from Tribhuvan University, he has also worked as a short-term research scholar at University of Copenhagen, Denmark (2016); University of Bergen, Norway (2000, 2005, 2006); University of Zurich, Switzerland (2004); University of Oxford, Institute of Ageing (2002); and University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1998). He has authored more than 65 articles and book chapters.
