The family of Ganesh Bahadur Basnet, who was killed by his fellow countryman in UAE, knew the news about his death three and a half years after the incident. Basnet, a native of Sunsari, was murdered by Durga Bahadur Sunar of Parbat in January 2009.
After a frantic search, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) traced Basnet’s family living at Hansponsa VDC-2 in Sunsari. The victim’s family was located by the District Administration Office, Sunsari.
The ministry wants an agreement with the victim’s family to save Sunar who has been given death penalty by a local court in Sharjah, UAE. But to the surprise of ministry officials, his family members were unaware about Basnet’s death. This came to light when they arrived at the ministry on Sunday.
“They (family members) were unaware that he (Basnet) was dead.
The family started crying after hearing the incident,” said Dilip Poudel, a MoFA official. Due to emotional environment, the ministry officials could talk father with them regarding giving pardon to Sunar.
According to MoFA officials, the court has given September deadline to Sunar family to make an agreement with the victim’s family for amnesty as per the UAE laws. If the family of the deceased pardons, Sunar, 30, will be freed from the jail. “
“We will talk about the possible agreement between the two parties as soon as victim’s family recovers from tragedy,” said Dilip Poudel
Both Sunar and late Basnet were working at Al Shirawi Equipment Company in UAE.
Sunar hails from Chitre VDC-5 in Parbat. His family is said to have agreed to provide blood money if the victim’s family demands.
