Kathmandu, March 7: The government is set to host a two-day National Labour and Employment Conference in Kathmandu on March 10-11.
The event will be held under the theme of ‘expansion of production and productivity: sustainable foundation for internal employment’.
At a press meet organised on Friday by the Ministry of Labour, Transport and Social Security, Minister Bhandari said the conference was designed to receive submissions regarding the strategic action plan for the Domestic Employment Promotion Decade. “It is for exploring opportunities for internal employment and its management.”
Stating that the lack of skills contributes to unemployment, he said, adding, “Domestic employment is an alternative to foreign employment”.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to inaugurate the event.
Ministry Spokesperson Danduraj Ghimire said around 500 people who include representatives from the three-tier governments, private sector, trade unions, researchers, experts, development partners and non-government sector will attend the event.
There has been additional pressure on foreign employment in absence of adequate domestic employment opportunities for workers. During the fiscal year, 2080-81 BS (2024-25) alone, a total of 714,297 Nepali workers received labor permit (including the renewal of permit), it is said.(RSS)
