KATHMANDU, May 16: The government distributed Rs 662.16 million in compensation to the families of 584 Nepali migrant workers who died or sustained injuries while working abroad during the fiscal year 2023/24.

The Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) transferred the compensation to the respective District Administration Offices. The funds came from foreign employment companies and insurance providers.

However, the Auditor General’s 62nd report flagged a discrepancy in the financial records. The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security mistakenly recorded Rs 2.177 million twice – once as income and then as expenditure – creating a mismatch between financial statements and actual payments.

The DoFE has yet to disburse Rs 50.79 million to the families of 33 individuals. It also found a Rs 484,000 discrepancy in the remaining balance due to the repayment amount being mistakenly recorded again as income.

The DoFE said it will distribute the remaining amount to the families once they finish collecting reports from District Administration Offices.
