Workers in Qatar thrown out of quarters

Hom Karki

Eighty-five Nepali migrant workers in Qatar, who were protesting their employer’s failure to pay them for the past six months, were thrown out of their quarters on Saturday.

Some of them reached the Nepali Embassy in Qatar for shelter on Sunday while half of them, one of the victims Suresh Mahato said, are staying outside.

Lil Bahadur Magar said the house owner on Saturday morning cut off electricity and water supplies for not paying the rent. “He locked up the door after ordering us out,” he said. One of the workers said they had not eaten anything for two days.

The migrant workers, most of them sent reportedly by Siddhidada Manpower in Kathmandu, had stopped work in protest.

The migrants, who were working at a construction company in Qatar, said their employer is out of contact. Nepali Ambassador to Qatar Maya Kumari Sharma said the employer was arrested. She added that discussions on settling the problem were under way.
