Work permits to be renewed from destination countries

The government has said that it is working on a mechanism to ease the process for migrant workers to obtain re-entry permit. As per the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MoLE), once such a mechanism is ready, migrant workers would not have to travel back to Nepal just to renew their visa by spending a lot of money.

Labor Minister Deepak Bohara said that Nepal's embassies and foreign missions in destination countries will start renewing the work permit soon. "Labor attaches in destination countries will be given the responsibility to renew the permits under the new mechanism."

Minister Bohara shared that migrant workers spend at least Rs 100,000 to come back to Nepal to get their work permit renewed. Every month, around 200,000 migrant workers come to renew their work permit at the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE).

The MoLE has informed that the new mechanism will be in place within three months. Workers will also be able to pay the welfare deposit at the Foreign Employment Promotion Board (FEPB) from abroad once the new mechanism comes into effect, according to him.

The MoLE even plans to renew entry permits from the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) from the next fiscal year.
