Women rights activists protest govt decision

Women rights activists and civil society members have accused the government of discriminating against DIG Parvati Thapa by not promoting her to the post of Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Nepal Police.

Addressing a peaceful protest in the Capital on Friday, women rights activists said the government showed prejudice by promoting an inexperienced candidate into the post of AIG. They were reacting to the Thursday’s Cabinet decision to promote DIG Upendra Kant Aryal to the post of AIG. The protester claimed that Thapa had three more years of work experience than Aryal.

Krishna Kumari Waiba, Women’s Chapter chairperson of the Nepal Association of Indigenous Nationalities, said Thapa has been the victim of injustice and discrimination.

“She (Thapa) was excluded just because she is a woman.  She had fulfilled all criteria to be appointed to the senior post,” she said.

Sheh Chand Tara, a chairperson of the National Women Commission, said the government should mend the injustice done upon Thapa by giving what she deserves in the coming days. The women activists have said that they would knock on the doors of the Apex Court and the international community if the government does not address their demands.
