‘Woman abused by employer in Lebanon’

ParbatT Portel

A woman who had gone to Lebanon for employment in 2004 was physically abused by her employer, her sister has claimed.

Tikamaya Nembang, 30, of Maheshpur, Jhapa, had gone to Lebanon to work as a maid after she was told by a foreign employment agent that it was a well-paying job. She boarded a flight to Lebanon from Delhi. She was 21 then.

“She spent three years in Lebanon. When she returned, she was a different person,” said Tikamaya’s sister Bhawana. “The first three years we were informed that she had been doing well in her job. After that she was abruptly sent home. She has gone mad, so we were told.”

Tikamaya’s parents died while she was still in Lebanon, so she moved in with Bhawana after returning to Nepal.

“She remains in bed all day and night, rarely says anything or recognises people aroundher,” Bhawana said. “She was abused by her employer in Lebanon, otherwise she would not be like this.”Bhawana has appealed the concerned authorities to investigate into the matter.
