UN special rapporteur arriving

The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of Migrants Felipe González Morales is arriving here tomorrow on an eight-day visit to assess recruitment practices, and return and reintegration programmes for Nepalis working abroad.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bharat Raj Poudel said the visit would disseminate a message that the government of Nepal is committed to protecting the rights of migrant workers. Poudel said, “Inviting UN special rapporteur for Nepal visit at a time when the country has moved ahead towards political stability and development is very significant.” The rapporteur is scheduled to meet government officials responsible for migration and labour, civil society, recruitment agencies, as well as aspiring migrants and returnees.

Morales, will present a comprehensive report of the visit to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2018. González Morales thanked the government for giving him the opportunity to visit Nepal. He said the visit would be fruitful in the context that 1,600 workers leave Nepal for foreign employment and remittances form up to 30 per cent of the country's GDP.
