Two British Gurkhas killed in Afghanistan

Two British Gurkhas were killed in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Afghanistan’s Helmand province on Tuesday, the UK Embassy in Kathmandu said in a statement today. 

The embassy has not mentioned their names and details, but said they belonged to UK Army’s 1st Battalion the Royal Gurkha Rifles.
 
However, the soldiers’ next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before more details are released. 
 
“It is with great sadness that the British Embassy announces the death of two soldiers from 1st Battalion of the Royal Gurkha Rifles, during operations on October 30, in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province Afghanistan,” read the statement. 
 
A spokesperson of the UK Army said they were shot and killed by a man wearing Afghan Police uniform at a checkpoint. 
 
“The loss of these soldiers is a huge blow to the Royal Gurkha Rifles and everyone serving in Task Force Helmand. Our thoughts are with their families, friends and fellow Gurkhas at this time,” the spokesperson added.
 
Family mourns
The murder of Siddhant Kuwar (29) serving at the Royal Gurkha Rifles of the British Army has left his family at Pokhara Sub-metropolis’s Rambazaar in a state of shock. Siddhant serving at the British Army’s 1st Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles was murdered at Nahr-e Saraj district of Afghanistan’s Helmand province on Tuesday. On hearing the tragedy, Kuwar’s 78-year-old father Shyam Kuwar has collapsed. Retired Indian Army man Shyam lamented that his son had joined the British Army despite his frequent requests not to join the Army. Recruited in the British Army in 2005 AD, Siddhant had come home three times. He had returned to the United Kingdom just 15 days ago. Siddhant was shot and killed by a man wearing Afghan Police uniform at a checkpoint. Siddhant’s mother died in1996. Intelligent at study, Siddhant had joined the British Army after completing his studies.
