Trade union submits demand to govt

The trade union associated with Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-Maoist) led by Mohan Baidhya today submitted a 25-point demand to the government.

It has asked for a hike in the salary of workers to Rs 15,000 per month, and Rs 700 for daily wage earners. The rising price of daily essentials has affected workers the most, so the government must hike the salary of workers, All Nepal Trade Union Federation (Revolutionary) said in a press statement. “Thousands of Nepalis are working in foreign lands like slaves as the government has failed to provide work. The condition of workers in Nepal is not good. They have been suffering from price hike and are insecure of their future,” it said, adding government must address the problem.

Unregulated or unmonitored liberal economy has been creating problems in the economy rather than the workers in building a congenial environment for industries and enterprises. Therefore, workers once again have to fight a battle against the forces, it said.

The trade union has threatened to start protests if the government ignores its 25-point demand that includes the formation of a constitutional committee on labour, abolition of ‘No Work No Pay’ and ‘Hire and Fire’ provisions from the draft of the new labour law, end to loadshedding, and punishment for the Mafia active in business sector.
It has asked for unemployment allowance for all, work permit for foreign workers, and ration cards for the poor at the earliest. It has also demanded for a labour hospital to be established from the Rs seven billion fund collected in the Social Security and National Welfare funds.

The government must reopen industries operated by the government and private sector that have been closed down. It will create jobs for thousands, it said. Similarly, the trade union has sought respect of all rights of workers in laws and practices.

Meanwhile, All Nepal Trade Union Federation (Revolutionary) has threatened to close down all hotels if their action against corrupt management is publicised as an attack on the private sector.

We will close down all hotels if the interest of the workers is ignored at the policy level, said president of the federation Ramdeep Acharya, while talking in an interaction at Media International. Referring to the attack on the top management officer of Hotel Radisson, he said that the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry is giving extra emphasis on the issue, adding if they do not stop it they would also raise the case.
