Samjhana Tamang , 22, of Syaule VDC-4 in the district, who left for Kuwait four months ago to work as a domestic help, returned home on Friday after being subjected to violence and trauma there.

According to Dr Shikhar Bahadur Swar, who is treating Tamang at Kathmandu-based Nepal Medical College, she is suffering from severe mental problems.

Dipak Aryal, coordinator of Paurakhi Nepal, an NGO working for migrant worker s, said Tamang had gone to Kuwait with the help of one Ram Maya of Golche in the district.

According to Tamang’s documents, the Department of Foreign Employment permitted her to leave for Kuwait on September 20. “I washed clothes and cleaned the house of my employer. An elderly woman often used to beat me severely,” said Tamang in her mother tongue. Meanwhile, four women in the district, who were also subjected to violence in Kuwait, returned home recently. Paurakhi Nepal, which helped them return home, said three of them left the country illegally. The victims, who were rescued with the help of various organisations and Kuwaiti police, have been identified as Kusum Lama, Mangali Tamang, Chandra Gole and Sangdolma Gole.

Mangali, who spent six months in police custody in Kuwait, was sent there by Lal Bahadur Tamang, one of her relatives. Chandra Gole had gone to Kuwait using the passport of Gita BK, a woman from Nawalparasi. The victims said they faced severe physical and mental torture in Kuwait. Meanwhile, Chandra and Sangdolma have been handed over to their families while Kusum and Mangali are still with the NGO.
