Talks to reopen Israel for Nepali jobseekers

Israeli ambassador to Nepal Hanan Goder-Goldberger said negotiations have been intensified with Nepal government to resume the stalled process to send Nepali job seekers to Israel soon.

“We are hopeful that we will reach an agreement soon which will pave the way to re-start the process of sending Nepali job aspirants to Israel within a few months,” said Goldberger at a press conference organized in Biratnagar on Tuesday.

Objecting the reported unethical practice and exploitation of jobseekers by manpower agencies, Israel suspended visas for the recruitment of Nepali workers, especially caregivers, three years ago. Though the Nepali officials and Israeli embassy officials met several times to seek ways to resume the process, the negotiations failed to achieve any breakthrough.

Israel instead, has been seeking a guarantee from Nepali officials and manpower agencies that malpractices in the sending process of workers to Israel will not be repeated. Around 8,000 Nepali workers mainly as caregivers, have been working in Israel.

Stating that relation between Nepali workers and employers has been like family members, Goldberger claimed there have been no reports of problem from Nepali workers while working in Israel.

Goldberger also informed the press conference that Israel was going to strengthen its support in improving internet connectivity in Nepal. “Israeli technicians are soon initiating the process to improve the internet quality in Nepal,” said Goldberger.

Meanwhile, local business entrepreneurs in Biratnagar held discussion with Goldberger in a bid to seek measures for promoting Nepal-Israel trade.

On the occasion, Dinesh Golchha, president of Morang Industries Association urged Israel to join hand with private sector to boost the bi-lateral trade, which is at nominal level. He also demanded that the Israel create a favorable environment for the entry of Nepali products to Israeli market. Ashok Murarka, a local industrialist, sought Israeli support to modernize farm technology and modernize agriculture sector in Nepal.
