Soaring numbers alarming: EU

The European Union today expressed concern about the growing number of refugees in the world.
Issuing a press statement today on the occasion of World Refugee Day the Union said the number of displaced people around the world had soared to a dramatic new high. The EU said, “We can count the number of refugees — more than 46 million, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees — but we cannot quantify the human suffering, the broken families, destroyed childhoods and livelihoods that come with fleeing a war or a disaster.”

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström and Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs and Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva today issued a joint press statement, which was circulated to the media by the Nepal Office on the occasion of World Refugees Day.

Refuges worldwide recount their origins, culture, and language and more importantly their family life, on the day.
There are more than 50,000 refugees from Bhutan living in eastern Nepal since the early 1990s.
In Europe, we have a particular reason to think about refugees and displaced people now that war on our doorstep has displaced more than six million Syrians, 1.6 million of whom are refugees, according to the press statement.

The EU also recently announced an additional package of 400 million Euros in aid for Syrians.
