S Korea to hire 3‚600 agriculture workers

South Korea — the most lucrative destination for Nepali migrant workers — is planning to hire 3,600 agriculture workers from Nepal in the year 2013, according to the Human Resource Department of South Korea’s website.

However, the department has not yet any information about the development.
Ministry of Labour and Employment has no information about it, an officer at ministry said, adding Human Resource Department of South Korea might send information to us. South Korea is hiring agriculture workers from eight among 15 Employment Permit System (EPS) nations including Timor, Uzbekistan, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Mongolia and Nepal.

Department is planning to conduct Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) in later half of the year. According to plan, EPS form will be distributed on June 16-19 and the exam will be held on September 6-7. Result of the test will be published on September 24.

South Korea had selected 2,600 Nepali agriculture workers in 2011 and most of them have already reached to the destination in last two years. Therefore, it is hiring additional agriculture workers this year.

According to the department, South Korea will sign memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the source country on May 21 to gear up the process. However, there is no official information about new hiring in manufacturing and service sectors, yet.

About 14,000 Nepalis have been working in South Korea under EPS system. The workers have been earning around $1,000 (Rs 85,000) per month.
