Rs 1m for rescuing trafficked victims in Bangkok

"We will soon release Rs 1 million for supporting rescue and repatriation process of trafficking victims," said Sunita Nepal, under secretary at MoWCSW.

She said that the amount will be released via National Committee for Controlling Human Trafficking at the MoWCSW.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and the Nepali embassy in Bangkok had earlier requested the MoWCSW to provide them funds for repatriation of trafficked Nepalis. Bangkok is not a destination for trafficked victims but a transit point from where women are trafficked to other countries.

The embassy in Bangkok has been helping the trafficking victims by seeking assistance from Non Resident Nepali community.

The MoWCSW has been providing funds to the Nepal Embassy in Delhi and the Consulate General in Calcutta for the same purpose.

The MoWCSW, which receives a total budget of Rs 10 million every year for rescue and repatriation efforts, runs eight shelter houses in Rupandehi, Chitwan, Sindhupalchowk, Banke, Kailali, Jhapa, Parsa and Kathmandu. A total of 903 rescued Nepalis, mainly women, were provided assistance by the MoWCSW and kept at those shelter houses.
