Relatives of dead migrant smell rat

Relatives of a woman who died in Mumbai, India, last month have demanded a probe claiming that she was murdered.

Maya Darnal, 25, of Gauradaha-4 in Jhapa, had travelled to India, from where she was supposed to board a flight to Saudi Arabia foremployment on an Indian passport.

One Gopal Sorkote had convinced Maya and two other women—Sapana Shrestha and Pabitra Budathoki—into going to Saudi Arabia on forged passports. The three women left for India on May 31. On July 23, Sorkote called Maya’s mother-in-law Devi Darnal, informing her of Maya’s death. Sapana and Pabitra’s whereabouts are unknown and Sorkote himself has disappeared.

Maya’s body was brought to Kathmandu on July 26. Relatives claimed that she had cuts and wounds on her neck and bruises on her arms. Sorkote had told Maya’s relatives that the wounds on her neck were the result of medications administered through the neck. Meanwhile, Maya’s husband, her brother and other relatives have travelled to Kathmandu to seek justice. Paurakhi Nepal, an organisation working on behalf of victims of foreign employment agents and agencies, is planning to file a police case against Sorkote.
