Re-registration of migrant workers declines

Department of Foreign Employment’s ambitious programme to register migrant workers rejoining foreign jobs has witnessed a continuous decline in the last three months.

The department had started recording the re-registration of migrant workers who join foreign jobs after they return to the home country from Mangsir (mid-November to mid-December).

About 20,930 migrant workers re-registered themselves at the department in Mangsir while the number dropped to 16,046 in Magh (mid-January to mid-February). The second month, Poush, recorded 18,131 in the category. About 1,071 women migrant workers re-registered in the same period.

The department has adopted the re-registration programme on the suggestion of the high-level committee which was formed under the leadership of Dr Ganesh Gurung. The committee has prepared a 30-point guideline to make the foreign employment sector safer by reducing fraud cases, and introducing transparency and accountability.

However, major suggestions have not yet been adopted by outsourcing agencies.
According to the department, the highest number of 19,370 migrant workers returning for employment to foreign destinations was recorded in Qatar followed by the United Arab Emirates (14,161), Saudi Arabia (12,904), Malaysia (2,861) and Kuwait (970). Data showed that re-registration of migrant workers from Malaysia is significantly low compared to new hirings.

The destination has hired 21,905 Nepalis during the period which is higher than the figure of 15,863 in Qatar.

According to the data of the department of foreign employment, about 55,107 migrant workers returned to the destination countries and rejoined their respective jobs in the last three months.
