Qatar, Nepal to hold technical meeting

Nepal and Qatar are scheduled to hold a meeting of Joint Technical Committee to resolve problems seen in the implementation and revision of various labour agreements signed between the two countries.

The secretary-level meeting held in Doha on Sunday agreed to hold a meeting in October or November to figure out the problems and potentiality of labour industry.
Nepal and Qatar signed a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2005 and labour agreement in January 2008. According to the agreement, the two countries were supposed to hold a meeting of joint technical committee alternatively every year. But no such meetings have taken place since the agreement was signed.

A joint meeting of the Nepali team led by Labour Secretary Som Lal Subedi and his Qatari counterpart Hussain Yousuf Al-Mulla agreed to hold a meeting after a 45-minute discussion.
“Both countries agreed to exchange their respective agendas and hold talks as soon as possible. The meeting is likely to be held in October or November,” said Joint Secretary Buddhi Bahadur Khadka.

Nepali official Girija Sharma said the Qatari team expressed its commitment to increase the demand and wage of workers, to provide technical support and training to workers, and to increase the demand of skilled manpower.

Qatar is currently providing employment to over 300,000 Nepali workers.
