Qatar firm to help rebuild quake-destroyed homes of its workers

A Qatar-based company has pledged support to build houses for its Nepali workers who have been victimized by the catastrophic magnitude 7.8 earthquake of April 25.

The Qatar-based company, Al Able Trading & Contracting, has sent its representatives to Nepal and started collecting details of the damage caused to the houses of its Nepali workers in various districts.

"Workers play very big role in making a company profitable. They will be able to give their best only if their condition is well," said Mijeyesh EK, general convener of the company. She informed that the company is determined to pacify their workers left distraught by the deadly earthquake in Nepal.

"I think the quake was more devastating than the foreign media have projected it," said EK. According to her, 400 out of 1,000 workers in her company are Nepali.

The company will complete monitoring the houses of its Nepali workers and then come up with rebuilding plans, said Ghanashyam Parajuli, a Nepali worker in the company. "The monitoring work will be completed in two days. Then within a week, the company will make decision and allocate how much money to spend per quake victim based on the severity of losses," he added.

According to him, so far Rs 3 million has been collected jointly by the workers and the company. The company contributed double the amount collected by the workers.

At a press conference organized in Chitwan on Sunday, a representative of the company said the company will release additional funds for rebuilding the homes if the collected amount proves insufficient.

The company has stated that 25 houses of its workers were completely destroyed by the quake. It said two houses in Chitwan, one in Dhading, two in Gorkha, two in Makawanpur, five in Nuwakot, three in Sindhuli and the remaining in Kathmandu and Sindhupalchowk districts were completely destroyed.

The quake victims have complained that the government has remained utterly inefficient in the rebuilding process.
