More than 200 women and children have been rescued from Jhulaghat, the western border transit point between Nepal and India in Baitadi district, in the last three years.

Police said these women and children were being taken to India by suspected traffickers. Police Sub-Inspector Umesh Kumar Pal of Border Police Post in Jhulaghat said 60 people, including 23 women and 27 children, were rescued in the fiscal year 2015/16, seventy-three people, including 24 women and 40 children, were rescued in the fiscal year 2016/17, and 87 individuals, including 17 women and 70 children, were rescued in the fiscal year 2017/18.

Most of the children were from the farwest. They had little or no education, and came from poor family backgrounds.

Sub-Inspector Pal said these children were going to India in search of job opportunities. On some occasion, the border police had stopped children in their school uniforms.
