Nuwakot authorities start relocating high-risk villages

PRAKASH ADHIKARI

The Nuwakot District Disaster Relief Committee (DDRC) has started mobilising security personnel to the earthquake-affected areas to relocate the people who now face danger of landslides .

“We started mobilising security personnel from today to relocate the settlements in 12 VDCs that are threatened by landslides ,” Chief District Officer (CDO) Umesh Kumar Dhakal said on Monday.

In the first phase of relocation, the people from the landslide-prone areas of constituency 1, 2 and 3 are being relocated.

Local Development Officer Rajendra Kumar KC said they have decided to relocate the people from the landslide-threatened areas to public lands and forests. “We are trying our best to not to cause any inconvenience to the people during their relocation,” he said.

Meanwhile, the damaged infrastructure in the district has not started even two months after the earthquake. Mahendra Mishra of Kabilash said they were unable to reconstruct the damaged houses due to fissures and cracks on the land.

Northern Dhading folk still deprived of relief

Meanwhile, bad weather has caused the helicopters ferrying relief materials to remote Ree and Jharland VDCs of Dhading district to return. The helicopters could not land because of poor visibility due to fog and rainfall. Transporting the relief supplies by road to the region is not possible due to landslides , said Chief District Officer Basudev Ghimire. Around 6,000 families in the northern region of the district have still not received the relief cash announced by the government so far.
