Noida murder widow seeks Indian govt largesse

Khum Kala Banjade, 46, the widow of Noida double murder victim Yam Prasad Banjade aka Hemraj, is happy with the court verdict in the case, but now wants the Indian government to extend some financial help.

Khum Kala´s happiness knew no bounds at the news that Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were given life terms by a court in Ghaziabad, India on Tuesday, for the murder of her husband, whom they employed as domestic help, and of their own daughter Arushi. Hemraj and Aarushi were murdered in the Talwar´s apartment in Noida on 15 May 2008.

However, Khum Kala´s happiness is tempered by the acute financial problems she has been facing after loosing her husband, the sole bread-winner of the family.

“My mother-in-law has fallen ill and my son is a heart patient needing extra medication and care,” said Khum Kala. “I need to manage the education of my children and what I earn from farming cannot feed the family even for three months in a year,” she said, adding that a little help from her father had been crucial for her.

“The Indian government has provided us justice. Now I urge the Indians to extend some largesse so that we can manage our living expenses,” Khum Kala said.

The Indian court on Tuesday pronounced Arushi´s dentist parents Rajesh and Nupur Talwar guilty of killing their own daughter and their domestic help.

“We were shocked to hear about Hemraj´s murder. Justice has been done, albeit a bit late, as the court has slapped life imprisonment on the Talwar couple. However, Khum Kala´s life is still one of hardship,” said Sagar KC, a local. “It would be better if the Indians extended her some largesse,” KC said.
