News of son's death after 3 years

Mohan Bahadur Basnet and his wife learned about their son's death today, three years after he was killed in Dubai.

The Basnet duo had gone to the Consular section of Ministry of Foreign Affairs today to inquire the whereabouts of their son, Ganesh Bahadur Basnet, who had left for Dubai eight years ago.

When the Consular Section Chief Dilip Poudel informed that their son was killed three-and-a-half years ago, the heartbroken parents fell unconscious.

As per the correspondence sent to the MoFA by the Dubai government, Ganesh Bahadur Basnet of Sunsari, Hasposa VDC, was killed by another Nepali, Durga Bahadur Sunar of Parbat.

After convicting Sunar of the murder, the Dubai government had announced capital punishment for him. In bid to save Sunar from the death penalty, Sunar's family and Nepal government had looked for Basnet's family but to no avail. Sunar would have been saved if the Basnet's family were willing to pardon him.

The last the Basnets heard from Ganesh was when he had informed them that he would return home shortly, as his visa was not extended, his father told The Himalayan Times after regaining consciousness.

When Ganesh did not contact them, they thought he might have got another job in Dubai. "We consulted astrologers when he did not contact us for so long. They said he would return soon," consular Poudel quoted Mohan Bahadur as saying.

According to Poudel, Ganesh's mother, Ambika, told him they would help Sunar's family get their son back from foreign jail even though she had lost her son.

Government had circulated the news of Ganesh's death through the district Administration offices throughout the country. Apparently a distant maternal uncle of Ganesh heard about it and tried to contact Ganesh's parents. It was after he told them about their son's death Basnets visited the consular section of MoFA today.

Ganesh's parents eke out a living by selling maize in the capital.

Consular chief Poudel has assured Ganesh's parents to initiate efforts to track the body of Ganesh and bring it back to Nepal.
