Santosh Pokharel

The family members of Krishna Bahadur KC(37) of Kaskikot-6, who committed suicide in the US on Friday, have little time to grieve on the loss and is more anxious about the debt incurred by him to go there.

Krishna, who was able to enter America illegally had spent over Rs 2.5 million paying unscrupulous immigration brokers to enter the country of his dream. Krishna´s Body was found hanging from a tree on Friday and it remains unclear why he killed himself.

Mohan KC, a close relative said Krisha had started his journey for America two years ago however, he could cross the border into America via Mexico after several months of rigorous attempt. Krishna, who was working in a supermarket, was out of work for the last two months due to his poor health.

“At the beginning they said that total expense would come at around Rs 2 million. However, it took him more time and money to reach America as he was going there illegally,” said Mohan. “He had mortgaged his house for Rs. 1.2 million to finance his journey. He had just paid the loan to retrieve his home, but remaining loans are still to be paid,” he added.

According to Mohan, Krishna was working 12 hours a day initially but had decreased it eight hours after his health deteriorated and finally quit the job two month ago.

“His death has further deteriorated the situation of his family which includes his 11-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter," Mohan further said. "The family is hardly eking out the livelihood."

Before heading toward America Krishna had worked in Qatar for 8 years. His friends had lured him with the better income in America which had inspired him to take the illegal route to the USA, Mohan further informed.
Relatives and villagers are preparing to send Krishna´s Wife Yamkumari to USA to perform his last rite as the family cannot afford to bring the body back to Nepal. “We have heard that bringing the dead body cost more than sending a person to USA from Nepal .So we have decided to send his wife to USA to perform last rites," said Mohan.
