Nepali held in Qatar freed

A Nepali teacher, who was jailed in Qatar for allegedly insulting Islam in front of students, was set free today. Dorjie Gurung of Mustang was a chemistry teacher in Qatar Academy until his dismissal for his alleged remark and was detained on May 1 when he was preparing to return to Nepal. Quoting his friends, Doha News said he was released today without mentioning whether any conditions were set for his release. He was held at the Al Rayyan police station for 10 days. According to Gurung’s colleagues, the teacher had been responding to ‘harassment’ from the Muslim students in a jocular vein but was charged with blasphemy. An online petition to Qatar condemning his arrest has already garnered more than 12,500 responses since Friday. — HNS
