NC Objects To Govt Move To Charge Stranded Nepalis For Rescue

Staff Reporter

Kathmandu, Aug. 23: The Nepali Congress on Saturday objected to the government’s decision of brining stranded Nepalis from abroad by charter flights at their own expenses.

Issuing a statement, NC Spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma said the government decision was against the verdict of the Supreme Court to rescue Nepali migrant workers stranded abroad by using government fund.

The NC said that the decision of the government to charge all expenses along with expensive air fare from migrant workers, who are already going through problems in their workplace, had made the party grave.

Sharma said his party would like to alert the government to abide by the court verdict of bearing expenses from the government treasury in bringing the migrant workers to the country, keeping them in quarantine and sending them home.

The party has reiterated its demand with the government to rescue the migrant workers using welfare fund without charging air fare as they have lost their jobs, asked to stay on unpaid leave and are left without any money.

The statement read the three tiers of government had to play different roles and they should coordinate to resolve the problem.

In reference to the Cabinet decision of allowing only three flights a day to rescue migrant labourers from abroad, NC said that it was not appropriate as it would take many months to bring in Nepalis wishing to return home.
