M’sia remembers Gurkhas’ contribution

The Warriors’ Association Malaysia (Persatuan Wira Malaysia) on Monday organised the annual commemorative function to honour the Gurkha soldiers who served during the First Emergency of Malaysia between 1948 and 1960. 
 
Nepali Ambassador to Malaysia Niranjan Man Singh Basnyat was invited as the guest of honour for the event which saw participation from the members of the diplomatic corps, war veterans and their families, said the statement issued by the Nepali mission in Malaysia.
 
On the occasion, Basnyat handed over a cheque for Malaysian Ringgit 19,500 to the association’s chair, Dato R Thambipillay, on behalf of the Nepal government, for the upkeep of the memorial site dedicated to the Gurkhas.
 
Basnyat and other guests also laid  wreaths at the Cenotaph of Gurkhas while the members of the Royal Australian Army Navy Air Force Band Association performed offered musical salutation in honour of the fallen Gurkhas.  
 
More than 300 Gurkhas had sacrificed their lives in the war against the insurgents.
