Migrant worker receives Rs 23.2m Doha damages

A Nepali migrant worker who met with a road accident in Qatar around four years ago has received a compensation of 806,000 Qatari Riyals (around Rs 23.2 million) from an insurance company.

Birga Gurung, 27, from Gorkha received the amount following a Qatari appellate court’s order directing the concerned insurance company to provide him compensation.

Gurung, who worked as a labourer, was knocked down by a car in Doha on January 2, 2009 while he was crossing the road.

According to the Nepali Embassy in Doha, Gurung spent four years in Hamad Hospital after the accident and returned to Nepal on October 13 after receiving the compensation. He is still undergoing treatment at a Kathmandu-based hospital.

Of the amount he received, Gurung is said to have given 167,000 Qatari Riyals (Rs 4.5 million) as service charge to the advocate who fought his case.

This is the first time a Nepali migrant worker has received such a huge amount of compensation in Qatar.

According to the Qatari laws, an individual who loses his or her life in a road accident is entitled to 100 percent compensation (200,000 Qatari Riyals).

However, if a person meets with a road accident and is in coma will be compensated according to his or her health condition.
