The Barabise police on Sunday arrested a man on the charge of trafficking women after one of the victims lodged a police complaint against him 10 years after being sold in an Indian brothel.

The 25-year-old Tamang woman lodged a complaint with the police against Tara Bahadur Basnet, 29, of Gati VDC of Sindhupalchowk after she returned home 10 years after being sold in an Indian brothel. Tamang is also from the Sindhupalchowk district. The district court of Kavrepalanchowk has sent Basnet to 15 days in custody for further investigation.

According to Tamang, Basnet has lured her and another Tamang girl from the village to Kathmandu with the promise of finding them lucrative jobs. Basnet had returned from Malaysia recently to celebrate the Dashain festival.

During interrogation, Basnet has admitted to his involvement in luring the girls to Kathmandu, said DSP Pratap Kumar Gurung. However, Basnet in his statement to the police has denied having sold the girls in Indian brothels.

“Only after three days in captivity in a house in Bombay did we realize that we had been sold. Later, we learnt we had been sold for Rs 50,000 each,” said the Tamang girl. “But we managed to escape after a year.”

After her escape, she spent eight years working in a garment factory in Bangalore. “I stayed in Bangalore until my relatives came searching for me,” said Tamang.
