Malaysia to hire 10,000 Nepalis as guards

Malaysian government has decided to hire 10,000 Nepali security guards after suspending for almost two years. Home Ministry has approved to hire 10,000 Nepali in security guards, The Strait Times reported.

However, the workers can only be sourced from among the thousands of illegal Nepali guards already working in the country.
Nepali Ambassador to Malaysia Dr Rishi Raj Adhikari, who disclosed this, said the approval followed a meeting he had with Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein recently.

“There is a huge demand for the services of Nepali guards in the country and various firms have been asking the embassy about their availability.

“We have received notification from the ministry that 10,000 Nepali security guards can be recruited from among our illegal workers here,” the envoy said.

He said a total of 33,000 illegal Nepali workers had registered under the ministry’s 6P legalisation programme, compared to 230,000 who came forward to prove that they were officially employed. Till date, about 9,000 of the illegal workers had been sent back to Nepal.

The embassy is working to process thousands of passport applications by our workers. “We have received permission from our Foreign Ministry for the temporary passports to be issued for 18 months as we can’t produce machine readable passports here,” he added.

He also said Nepal was prepared to send domestic workers to Malaysia if a request was formally made. Its domestic helps market is filled with women migrant workers from Indonesia.
