Less Nepalis died in Qatar last year

More than two dozen less Nepalis lost their lives in Qatar – the popular job destination for Nepali migrant workers – last year. Nepali embassy in Doha recorded 13 suicide cases, 92 deaths from cardiac ailments, 35 deaths from road accidents and 22 deaths at workplaces totaling to 162, Gulf Times reported quoting ambassador Suryanath Mishra today.

“There is a continuous fall in death of Nepali migrant workers in last three years, the data revealed, adding that some 217 Nepalis died in 2009, while 192 Nepalis died in 2010. Awareness campaigns in Nepal and Qatar have believed to help reducing deaths. “Awareness on safe and legal migration, and job and culture orientation at home also helped reduce death,” he said.

Likewise, Traffic Department of Qatar had organised awareness campaign for migrant workers to reduce their death.

“It has also played significant role to reduce road accidents in last three years,” he added.
About 72 Nepalis had lost their lives on road accident in 2009.

According to Mishra, deaths of Nepali migrant workers had increased between 2006 and 2008. There were 143 deaths in 2006 while the number went up to 162 next year and 175 in 2008.

Suicide was one of the major death causes between 2005 and 2010. Not less than 20 suicide deaths were reported then.

Cardiac ailments were always a major death cause in Qatar since 1995. In 2011 also, it took lives of 53.8 per cent (some 92) Nepalis working in Qatar due to excessive drinking of alcohol and sharp difference in temperature in working and residential places.
