Labor export up by 14%
The number of workers leaving for overseas destinations increased by 14 percent during the first ten months of the 2012/13 compared to the number recorded during the same period last year.
Data compiled by the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) shows a total of 357,707 workers, including 22,213 women, left for foreign jobs in the review period, compared to 313,034 workers that flew to international job markets during the first ten months of 2011/12.
Of the total workers, 314,481 arrange jobs through manpower agencies, while the remaining 40,841 managed to secure jobs through individual channel.
Malaysia continued to become the most sought after destination for Nepali workers during the review period, as the South East Asian nation received 126,566 job aspirants. Similarly, Saudi Arabia came second with 69,447 job seekers, followed by Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) which received 68,527 and 43,103 workers, respectively.
Nepali workers are highly dependent on four destinations - Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE - due to the failure of the government and man power agencies in diversifying labor destinations. More than 86 percent of the overseas migrants who left for international labor destinations during the review period landed in these four destinations.
Of the 39,280 workers who left for overseas jobs in the 10th month of 2012/13, Malaysia received 11,498 workers followed by Qatar with 10,304 workers, Saudi Arabia with 7,465 workers and the UAE with 3,862 workers.
