Family members of two Nepali workers, who had died in Qatar nearly five years ago, received a compensation amount over Rs6 million each.

The Qatar’s Ministry of Interior decided to compensate family members of two Nepali workers—Shiran Kapar of Dhanusha and Purna Bahadur Sarki—with Qatari Riyal 200,000 (Rs6.16 million) each, according to the Nepali Embassy in Qatar.

The embassy said in a press statement that the compensation came after embassy’s continuous lobbying with the Qatari authorities to provide financial support to relatives of workers who died in 2014.“We were in regular talks with local authorities in Qatar and appealed for compensation for the families of deceased workers. We had requested them to help the families back home on humanitarian grounds. They agreed and decided to provide financial support,” Nepali Ambassador to Qatar Ramesh Prasad Koirala told the Post over the phone.

The family members were invited to Doha by the Qatari government to receive the financial aid. “This was the first instance of kin of a deceased worker being invited by the Qatari government to receive compensation. The Qatari government has also paid for their travel expenses” Koirala added. Kakulti Devi Kapar and and Shanti Sharki were handed over the compensation amount at the Qatar’s Ministry of Interior in Doha last Tuesday. According to the ambassador, the money will be directly transferred to the family members’ bank accounts.
