Jhapa tops worker migration list‚ data shows

Jhapa, the far-eastern district of the country, is the largest sender of migrant workers abroad, a government data revealed.

According to the Department of Foreign Employment, the district sent about 11,776 workers for foreign jobs in fiscal year 2011-12. Earlier, Dhanusha was the top worker sending district. The district has sent 58,277 workers for foreign jobs between 2005-06 and 2010-11, when Jhapa was in the second position.

Jhapa is in the second position for sending women migrant workers with 647 women joining foreign jobs during the period. Morang has a record number of 749 women migrant workers travelling abroad in fiscal year 2011-12.

Dhanusha was placed second overall as 11,636 workers joined foreign jobs followed by Morang (11,104), Mahottari (9,474) and Siraha (9,220). All top worker sending districts are from the terai because of its population size, said director at the department Kashiraj Dahal.

“The population of a district is a determining factor for high migration,” he said. According to him, top nine worker sending districts are from the terai — from Jhapa to Kailali.

The hill district of Tanahun was placed in the 10th position with 7,675 people going abroad followed by Dhading (5,476) and Sindhuli (5,081). Karnali had the lowest migration, continuing with the previous trend. Jumla had sent 69 workers for foreign jobs last year, while Mugu and Dolpa had sent 51 and 9 workers, respectively.

There was no record of foreign job migration from Humla and Kalikot. Mountain districts of Manang and Mustang had sent 29 and 22 workers respectively.

Eleven districts –– Manang, Doti, Bajhang, Mustang, Bajura, Mugu, Achham, Humla, Kalikot, Jumla and Dolpa –– had less than 1,000 workers in overseas jobs between fiscal years 2005-06 and 2010-11.
