Israel to resume hiring Nepali caregivers 'soon'

Israel has announced to resume hiring Nepalese caregivers after a ´mechanism´ is developed to ensure transparency in their hiring process in Nepal.

Israeli Ambassador to Nepal, Hanan Goder, said Tuesday that Nepali and Israeli authorities are currently working to develop the mechanism so that people aspiring to go to Israel for works do not have to be charged exorbitantly by outsourcing agencies. "The process of hiring Nepali caregivers will resume in the next few months," he said.

The envoy said the mechanism aims at ensuring transparency in hiring and the professionals aspiring to go to Israel for work are selected on merit basis. The mechanism will set new guidelines and conditions for outsourcing agencies, forcing them to stop ´irregularities´ of all sorts.

Addressing a press conference organized in the capital to brief about the embassy´s activities, the envoy said Nepali workers have excellent reputation in Israel. "Nepali workers are very professional, devoted to their work and pleasant with host families," he said.

Currently, some 8,000 Nepalis are working as caregivers or farm workers in Israel.

Israel stalled hiring Nepali workers following reports that unscrupulous manpower agencies in Nepal were charging exorbitantly high service fee for the job and compelling the workers to become illegal. "The demand for Nepali workers can be more than 80,000. Though a limited numbers of workers are going to Israel even these days, a full-fledged hiring process will begin after the mechanism to ensure transparency in hiring is brought to implementation," the envoy further said.

Israel is considered one of the most lucrative labor destinations for Nepali workers as the Israeli government itself has set monthly minimum wage at US$ 1200.

On the occasion, Deputy Chief of Mission at the embassy Adam Levene said the embassy´s activities in Nepal are focused mainly on the field of health, culture, education, technology, agriculture. Among other things, the embassy is providing training to Nepali professionals from various fields including agricultural projects using Israeli technology and knowhow.
