INSEC urges govt to save five Nepalis' lives in Indonesia

Informal Sector Service Centre today urged the government to initiate diplomatic efforts to save lives of five Nepalis who have been sentenced to death by an Indonesian court yesterday on drugs-related crimes.

Issuing a statement, the human rights organisation said Bahar Tamang, Bir Bahadur Gurung, Indra Bahadur Tamang, Nara Bahadur Tamang and Til Bahadur Bhandari were sentenced to death in Indonesia.

Talking to THT, Acting Foreign Secretary Shankar Das Bairagi said the government was informed about the case and was trying to take stock of the situation before launching diplomatic efforts to save their lives.

Nepal is a signatory of an international convention against the death penalty and INSEC, reminding the government of the same, has said it is the moral responsibility of the government to save the lives these five Nepalis.

Protesting against the death penalty served by an Indonesian court, the Netherlands and Brazil have recalled their envoys from Indonesia.
