Home-Bound Nepalis Facing Hassles at Border Area

With the onset of Dashain, the greatest festival of Hindus, Nepalis migrant workers returning home have been facing many hassles in India while crossing the Indo-Nepal border area of late. According to Sudip Giri, Superintendent of Police at the District Police Office, Kanchanpur, hundreds of workers have been entering into the country via Trinagar transit in Dhangadhi and Gadda Chauki transit in Kanchapur district in recent days.

Although a citizen help desk has been set up in coordination with the Indian Security Force at the border area, however, it is yet to be effective. As many migrant workers have been returning home in numbers, incidents related to they being robbed in the Indian territory has also increased.

Two Nepali migrant workers were defrauded in India while crossing the border area on Tuesday. Ganesh Damai, 19, of Godawari Municipality-6 and Gopal Bohara, 34, of Uttar Bankhet-4 in the Municipality were robbed in Indian side while returning home for the upcoming festivals.

The robbers took away their two mobile sets and Indian banknotes INRs 10,000. Likewise, Kul Darji of Phukut Rural Municipality-2 in Kalikot district was also robbed in Mahendranagar Bazar of Kanchanpur district while returning home from India. The robbers then made off INRs 40,000 from Dorji after offering him adulterated juice drink, police said.
