Handbook on home-based workers

KATHMANDU: A survey has revealed that the number of home-based workers, mostly women, who earn a living through sewing, weaving, and making handicrafts, is around 19.2 per cent across the country.

The survey was made public amid a programme conducted by the HomeNet South Asia Trust and the Centre for Labour and Social Studies Nepal (CLASS Nepal) with the support of the European Commission held in the capital on Tuesday with an aim to draw the attention of the local and federal government to the problems of home-based workers.

It was mentioned that there is a lack of special policies and programmes in place for the benefit of the self-employed home-based workers, and participants emphasised on the need for a separate department at the Ministry of Labour to address their issues.

A handbook on home-based workers prepared in coordination with CLASS Nepal and SABAH, SAATHI, WHR, KWAS, HBWCSN, and HBWWS was also jointly released at the event.
