Gurkhas garner Cameron support

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has supported the struggle of the ex-British Gurkha soldiers for equal pension and treatment as their counterparts in the British Army.

Cameron wrote a letter addressed to Gurkha Satyagraha with the assurance to address the demands of Gurkha veterans through dialogue. The British prime minister has also urged the agitating side not to resort to a hunger strike as announced.

The letter assures that the UK defence minister will correspond with the Gurkha Satyagraha in the near future to form the basis for talks to find an amicable solution.

Coordinator of United Struggle Committee Santosh Thalang and Campaign Director Gyanraj Rai said Cameron’s letter in support of their cause has provided hope of headway towards fulfilment of their demands.

Gurkha Envoy Ramnarayan Kandangwa termed it a ‘significant step’ taken by the UK government, unprecedented in the history of their struggle for equality.

The committee has called for unity and support from all sides at this crucial moment to help take the ongoing struggle to its logical end. It was the third letter sent to Gurkha Satyagraha by Cameron.
