Govt should consult us before signing deal with Malaysia: NAFEA

The Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA) has expressed its dissatisfaction over government´s decision to send housemaids to Malaysia.

NAFEA has said the government should have consulted the stakeholders before signing such a deal with the Malaysian government. “The government took a unilateral decision to send housemaids to Malaysia,” said Kamal Tamang, General Secretary of the NAFEA.

Earlier this week, the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MoLE) and the Malaysian government had reached an agreement on forming a joint taskforce to draft a separate MoU on domestic workers. However, MoLE has already forwarded a draft MoU to Malaysia, which proposes a minimum salary of 300 dollars per month, one day a week off and overtime payment for Nepali housemaids.

NAFEA submitted an 11-point memorandum to State Minister for Labor and Employment Tek Bahadur Gurung on Tuesday.  The umbrella organization of the manpower agencies expressed reservations over the government´s decision on signing a tripartite agreement between aspirant migrant workers, manpower agencies and the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) stating such a process will put additional burden on workers and manpower agencies.
