Govt for Utilizing Remittance for Economic Development

Amid a growing call for "proper utilization" of remittance in the country, the government has announced that it would use the money sent by Nepalese abroad in the economic development of the country.

The government has said that it would create an environment to encourage investment of remittance in various hydropower projects in the coming years.

According to a recent report released by World Bank, remittance to Nepal surged dramatically by 20.9 percent in the post-quake period as against 3.2 percent in 2014. The report states that migrant workers sent more money post-earthquake to support their family members and also for rebuilding purposes.

According to the government's policy and program 2016/17, it aims to introduce measures to make foreign employment systematic, dignified and reliable. Sending professional and technical manpower to attractive and safe destinations is also one of its major goals.

Apart from these policies, the government plans to reintegrate returnee migrant workers into the national labor force by recognizing their skills.

"The process of issuing certificates by testing skills of workers who have returned from foreign employment will be started by engaging agencies such as the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT)," the document adds.
