Policymakers and experts have said that reconstruction and rehabilitation works following the April 25 earthquake should be focused on promoting resilient livelihoods.

Speaking at a programme organised to launch a book on “Strategic Framework for Resilient Livelihoods in Earthquake-Affected areas of Nepal” in Kathmandu on Friday, National Planning Commission (NPC) Vice-chairman Govinda Pokharel said the livelihood recovery strategy should focus on addressing the damage caused by the earthquake and building the affected communities resilient. “Building resilient communities by constructing disaster-resilient buildings and infrastructures is crucial to mitigate future risks,” he said.

The NPC in collaboration with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) released the book outlining key components--such as strengthening skills and capacity of affected people, revitalising farming, tourism and other enterprises and empowering community--of the resilient livelihood strategy. ICIMOD Director General David Molden said the strategic framework aims to complement the Post Disaster Needs Assessment of the government. He said it will provide insights into the livelihood dimensions of the earthquake and its socio-economic impacts.
