Ex-Kamaiyas want dev

At a time when the election fever has gripped the district, freed Kamaiyas (bonded labourers) of Gularia Municipality say they will cast their votes for candidates who are concerned about the issues of rural development, employment and their settlement.

They said that they will consult their chieftain and cast their votes for those candidates who will help them in need. “We are yet to decide on whom to vote in this election,” Parshu Tharu, a former Kamaiya of Gulariya-5, said, adding, “We cast our votes in the previous CA election. But, leaders never returned again after they were elected.” Freed Kamaiya Ramsharan Tharu said that they are to decide whom they will vote for this election.

There are around 100 households of former Kamaiyas in the municipality.

Rangilal Tharu of Gularia-5 said that they still depend on their chieftain to decide on important issues though the practice is declining after the multi-party democratic system was introduced in the country.
